Tell us about Made for Spain and Portugal.

Clark: When a client comes to me wanting to explore Spain or Portugal on their own terms, not on a group tour or a cruise, this is who I turn to. What stood out about your visit to Barcelona?

Clark: We were able to experience firsthand the expertise of Made for Spain and Portugal during three days in Barcelona, with a company representative by our side the entire time. We saw Antoni Gaudí's iconic architecture, including the famous apartment building La Pedrera, and the Sagrada Família with its glittering painted spires. We also visited the Palau de la Música Catalana, a modernist concert hall, and the Fundació Joan Miró, a museum dedicated to the celebrated Spanish artist, which is situated on the hill of Montjuïc and offers sweeping views over the city.

They took us to a local food market, not the Boqueria but a smaller one where people from Barcelona actually shop, with vendors selling fresh octopus, extraordinary cheeses, pastries and cured meats.

We also had the chance to tour six hotels that Made for Spain and Portugal works with, and we dined at each one. Each hotel was terrific, but two really stood out. At El Palace Barcelona, which opened in 1919 as the former Ritz of Barcelona, the management couldn't do enough for us, even pulling off last-minute Sagrada Família tickets and taking us to the rooftop of the hotel at sunset. Serras Barcelona, a boutique hotel near the port, was equally impressive. The building that houses the hotel has a remarkable history. In 1896, a 15-year-old Pablo Picasso used its rooftop as his first studio, where he painted his early masterwork Ciencia y Caridad (Science and Charity). Today, that same rooftop has been transformed into a stunning terrace with a plunge pool and a restaurant where guests can dine with sweeping views of the Mediterranean.

I can’t say enough about visiting Barcelona in the off-season. Although we were there in early December, we never needed a coat. The crowds were minimal; the weather was gorgeous and the city felt like ours to explore.

You took a day trip to Toledo, Ellen. How did Made for Spain and Portugal handle the logistics?

Wyler: Toledo had always been on my must-visit list—it’s an ancient, beautifully preserved city with water surrounding it on nearly every side, a beautiful Catholic church and a historic Jewish quarter. I simply told Made for Spain and Portugal I wanted a guided day there to see the highlights, and they took care of absolutely everything. They arranged the train from Madrid— it’s just 30 minutes by high-speed rail—and when I arrived at the Toledo station, my guide was there waiting for me.

My guide and I had a private driver who took us to an overlook of the city. Wherever the streets were pedestrian-only, we walked, with the guide explaining everything along the way. After the tour, my guide walked me back to the train station and waited with me until my train arrived. In a small city where very few people speak English, that kind of attentiveness is invaluable. It’s exactly the level of care I would arrange for my own clients, and experiencing it firsthand gave me tremendous confidence in recommending Made for Spain and Portugal.
